Fire Drill on Campus

In order to strengthen the students’ sense of fire safety and increase their ability to prevent and control fires as well as dealing with emergencies, a fire drill was held, jointly organised by Nanchang’s Changbei Fire Brigade, the School’s Security Department, the School Hospital, the Logistics Centre and the International School, at 4 p.m. on 4th November in the International School’s hall of residence in the South Campus.

A total of more than 600 staff and student representatives attended the drill. They included: Yi Xiaoming, the Deputy Dean; the fire brigade; Jiaoqiao police station; Xu Mingxi, the Head of Security; Xi Jinwen and Tu Yan, the assistant secretaries of the School Youth League Committee; Zheng Yun, the secretary of the general Party branch. Certain media within Jiangxi Province, such as the Jiangxi Daily, Jiangxi TV, Jiangxi Education TV, and Xinhua Online, were invited to participate in the reporting. The themes of this activity were “strengthening a sense of safety, learning about fire control, creating a harmonious campus”. The aim was to strengthen the fire safety education for staff and students, increasing their ability to deal with emergencies.

Prior to this, a seminar was held in Classroom 1206 in the South Campus, to introduce students to fire safety and the handling of emergencies. The seminar covered “eliminating actions that cause fire and the education of the warnings of fire”. This seminar was given by the leader of the fire brigade of Changbei Jingkai district. The seminar aimed at helping students understand the importance of fire control.

At 4 p.m., Yi Xiaoming, the Deputy Dean, gave permission for the drill to commence. In a simulated fire scene in the No. 4 hall of residence of the South Campus, trapped students called the School’s emergency number 110. As soon as the School Security Department and the International School received the call, they worked according to the fire contingency plan: to organise a volunteer fire fighting team to hurry to the scene of fire, and to inform relevant leaders. Ambulance personnel and firefighters moved quickly, throwing themselves into the task of firefighting, and erecting inflatable rescue cushions to save the trapped students and the wounded. Under the instruction of the teachers, students used wet towels to cover their nose and mouth, leaving the scene in an orderly manner. The drill completed successfully with cooperation from all the departments concerned. It achieved what it set out to do, and was taken seriously by the various heads of departments. Mr He, the staff officer of the city fire brigade said that this drill aimed at raising staff and students’ understanding of fire safety and escaping with their lives.

This fire drill has helped to promote basic knowledge and skills for fire prevention, escaping alive, and saving others in a fire. It also tested the rationale and feasibility of the fire contingency plan, and whether the firefighting equipment was in sound condition, as well as improving the coordination and emergency management of each department when dealing with an emergency.
