The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (UK) constitutes the greater part of the British Isles, a group of islands lying off the northwest coast of Europe. The largest of the islands is Great Britain, which comprises England, Wales and Scotland. Culture in the United Kingdom is rich and diverse, with a strong tradition of literature, theatre, popular and orchestral music and the performing arts. These, together with collections in UK museums and galleries, act as a magnet for overseas visitors and make a substantial contribution to the economy. I studied at University of York. It has become one of the top ten universities in the UK for teaching and research. There are now over 30 academic departments and research centres and the student body has expanded to nearly 16,000. York is a walled city, situated at the confluence of the Rivers Ouse and Foss in North Yorkshire, England. The city has a rich heritage and has provided the backdrop to major political events throughout much of its two millennia of existence. The city offers a wealth of historic attractions, of which York Minster is the most prominent, and a variety of cultural and sporting activities. In recent decades, the economy of York has moved from being dominated by its confectionery and railway related industries to one that provides services. The University of York and health services have become major employers, whilst tourism has become an important element of the local economy.
In the first week, the University arranges warm-up activities for us freshmen, such as campus tour, to help students get familiar with the environment, meet new students and make new friends. During this period, the school arranges freshmen with your personal tutor. The tutor not only can help students solve the question at the aspect of life, but also can give direct instruction in terms of learning. In addition, each university has a reception, specifically to help students, especially overseas students. Studying in the UK, you will find that the teachers are very kind, for they are very happy to solve any questions you have, as a reliable friend. The style of teaching in the UK is diverse, in the form of class teacher lecturing, group discussion, team work and project practice. Also, the tests are also in a variety of ways such as working papers, speech shows, the final exam, and graduation thesis. So it is a comprehensive exercise for students which can fully assess students' learning situation.
According to my own experience, the following points should be paid attention to. To begin with, It is better to pass the the English test before going abroad if you determine to choose to study abroad. English is a piece of indispensable "ticket" for everyone who wants to study in Commonwealth of Nations. If you want to go abroad to learn English later, it will be costly. It is difficult to catch with the course if your English is poor. If teachers offers you some notes and outlines, you can understand more easily. Otherwise, only serval words can be understood so that you will fall behind gradually. Usually, the teacher in international university cannot take your language level into account. They only slow down and repeat when keys and difficulties are met. Otherwise,it will affect the course of progress, and even will cause dissatisfaction with the other students.
What is more, Self-study ability and independent thinking play key roles in study in the UK. At the university, teachers pay attention to autonomous learning, many of whom can only take the leading role. The teachers in class just introduce the basic content of courses, guiding the way and scope of accessing information, pointing out the requirements of homework and letting the students access information in the library and the Internet. In the UK campus, Chinese students are all day in the classroom, library and computer room. There are spacious classrooms and advanced teaching equipment. When walking into the library, you can feel falling into the ocean of books, because you can read every book and you will feel a kind of satisfaction.
Also, safety should be strongly considered. It includes several aspects. Firstly, we cannot ignore the living safety. You should try to look for a house near the school. If you have to live to far away from the school you had better choose a good public security area. I lived in the campus when I studied in the York. It is a quite peaceful and beautiful place. The following picture is the house I live. I miss the environment so much. Secondly, you should pay attention to the property security. Whether in the dormitory, in the library, computer room and other public places, private property must be carefully taken. For example, when you leave the room, the bathroom or answering the telephone, you must bring the money with you. Thirdly, the traffic safety. British cars are driven on the left of the road. It is just the opposite of the Chinese habit. So when you walking, especially crossing the street, you must see traffic signs and follow them.
Besides, when you study in the UK, it is advisable to have a trip to Europe. As we all known, a lot of counties in Europe are famous as tourist places such as France, Italy and Switzerland. The scenery can make us relax. when you go abroad, studying is important but it is not the only thing you can do. You can also learn in traveling. A range of people and things you will meet during traveling. It can expand your knowledge and enrich your life. When I have a long holiday, I usually have trips. I visit places in the UK and other countries of Europe. The sea in Nice is really nice. The sea links to the sky in a charming blue colour. I forgot everything unhappy that time and enjoyed the view. Italy is also great. I know Venice when I were young and I can go there to achieve my dreams during the year I studied in the UK. It is exciting and meaningful.
Overall, I obtain a lot of things during this year and it is my happiest year in my life.
